The zoo started keeping capybaras in 1966, and started an open-air bath for them in the winter of 1982. They are now very popular animals in Japan.

The zoo opened in 1959. Peacocks and squirrel monkeys roam freely within the zoo,
which is located in the foothills of the national natural treasure Mount Omuro and spans an area of approximately 200,000 ㎡.
You can also enter the area where the capybaras and kangaroos live and experience feeding them treats!

Welcome to the world of birds, where you can observe birds living in a near-natural environment from up close.
Cacti and succulents
gathered from all across the world
The Plateau Dragon, the symbol of the park, serves as the entrance to the greenhouse. You will be overwhelmed by our approximately 1,500 varieties of cacti and succulents. Admire columnar cacti more than 5m in height, edible prickly pear cacti, cacti as small as 3cm, and Echinocactus grusonii, the king of cacti, which is more than 170 years old.

Experience cactus picking

Approximately 100 varieties of cacti and succulents are available for sale at any one time. You can make your own unique, one-of-a-kind potted cacti. Once you have selected your cacti and pot, the staff at the workshop will add soil to complete your original potted cacti.

Huge columnar cacti, prickly pear cacti, and small jade cacti are displayed here. Home to Pereskia grandifolia, a type of cactus that looks like an ordinary tree. Primitive, large cacti.

Africa Pavilion

Cacti do not grow wild in Africa!? All the plants in this greenhouse are succulents, including the dragon tree, which lives for 7,000 years, lithops, which are known as living jewels, and many other rare plants.

Unusual cacti living on jungle trees and night-blooming cacti with fragrant flowers that only bloom for one night are displayed here. In winter, you can find the schlumbergera cacti in full bloom.

Madagascar Pavilion

Here, you can find many plants from the Didiereaceae family, which is native to Madagascar, and many other rare succulents.

Mexico Pavilion

Cacti and succulents that grow in the area spanning Mexico and North America are displayed here. This greenhouse is home to some of the largest greenhouse cacti, including the giant columnar cacti Cephalocereus polylophus and Pachycereus pringlei (Mexican giant cactus), and Echinocactus grusonii (golden shachihoko), a spherical cactus that is about 170 years old.

Ancient Ruins Rock Garden
Many outdoor cacti and succulents are planted in the rock garden, and the replica stone statues that have been installed here are extremely valuable.

Can I bring my pet with me?
Pets are allowed to enter the zoo as long as they are leashed. There are some areas of the zoo where pets are not allowed, so we ask that pet owners take turns to enter these areas.

Are coin lockers available?
Yes, coin lockers are available. You can leave large items that do not fit inside a coin locker at the entrance (payment required).
Are strollers available?
Yes, strollers are available (payment required). Please note that there are a limited number of strollers available, and that strollers are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Is there a space available for changing diapers and breastfeeding?
Baby rooms are available for your use.
Is there a first aid room available in case I feel unwell?
Yes, there is. Please ask a nearby staff member.
Can I make reservations at the zoo's restaurants?
Only group reservations are accepted at Forest Animal Restaurant ~GIBBONTEI~ in Izu Shaboten Park. Reservations may not be accepted during peak season or due to maintenance, so please contact the Group Reservation Center (TEL: 0557-51-5553) for details.
How many spots are available in the parking lot?
The parking lot can accommodate up to 400 cars amd 18 buses.
Can I bring my own food and drinks?
In general, you are allowed to bring your own food and drinks. However, please use the benches in the zoo when eating, and either dispose of your garbage in a designated area or take your garbage home with you. The eateries in the zoo also offer a variety of food and beverages, so feel free to make use of them. Do not give any food or drink you bring with you to the animals.
Are credit cards accepted? Are there ATMs in the zoo?
You can use credit cards to pay for admission tickets (main gate/pedestrian gate), as well as for payments at Forest Animal Restaurant ~GIBBONTEI~ and GIFT SHOP Animal Mart. There are no ATMs available in the zoo, so please visit a nearby convenience store.
